MALAWI FOOD CRISIS

Emergency Appeal:

Malawi Food Crisis

The Situation

Extreme weather has wiped out crops. Devastating floods, followed by erratic rains and prolonged drought have crippled the country’s food supplies.

When hunger strikes it hits the poorest and most vulnerable first hardest.

Desperate to feed their families, people are spending days travelling to markets and queuing for food. Yet they come home empty-handed because there just isn’t enough food to go around.

How you can help

The people of Malawi need your help to stop the hunger.

It costs just £36 to feed a family of 6 for three months.

EMMS International has launched an appeal to bring emergency food aid and stop the hunger, and the Scottish Government has pledged to match public donations.

Your support will:

Providing monthly food to households, especially those who are most vulnerable

Helping farmers to grow what they can

Building grain stores to protect valuable crops for the difficult months to come

What can you do?

Your church or group can help by:

Making the people of Malawi part of your church. Choose a Sunday focus on the people of Malawi through prayer, reflection and song.

Taking a special offering to show support and solidarity with the church in Malawi. Use this guide as inspiration.

Praying for Malawi. At home or at church, alone or together, your prayers have the power to transform lives. There are some suggestions for you below.

Get together and do something. Hold a fundraiser; a special lunch, concert or event.

Share the story. Sadly tragic events like this often happen out of sight and out of mind, you’ll find resources on our website and on our facebook and Twitter profiles to help you draw people’s attention to this situtation.

For inspiration

For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

Matthew 25:42-43

Pray for Malawi

For an end to hunger and for health and strength for all those who are in need of food.

For food growers and farmers, that they will do all they can to adapt to the changing weather and be productive in their work whether they are tending a large or a small garden.

For compassion in the distribution of food so that those who are most vulnerable get the food they need.

For the care of creation, that we would all do our part to stop the changes to climate that affect the poorest and most vulnerable first and hardest.
