CULTIVATING A CULTURE OF GENEROSITY

WHEN IT COMES TO GENEROSITY IT’S THE ATTITUDE NOT THE AMOUNT THAT COUNTS

When we talk about generosity, we tend to focus first and foremost on money, and how much money we or someone else gives. However, according to God’s Word generosity is seen in every area of your life, not just your bank account.

Listen to the Apostle talking about generosity

“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” (2 Corinthians 9:11 NIV).

We are told to “be generous on every occasion”? What does that look like in our day to lives?

I like how Rick Warren summarises it

“It means being generous with your time, praise, sympathy, forgiveness, love, compliments, and kindness. It means being generous with your listening so that you can seek to understand others. And it means being generous with your attention so that you can be aware of the needs of people.

So according to God’s Word generosity is about every aspect of our life not just our financial giving, and Scripture has another important point to get over about generosity we need to take on board.

Motivation matters. God is more interested in the why and how you give
more than the amount you give.

Radical generosity is an attitude, not an amount.

Let’s listen to Scripture again “If you are really eager to give, then it isn’t important how much you have to give. God wants you to give what you have, not what you haven’t” (2 Corinthians 8:12 NLT).

These verses remind us that the church is to be a community of radical generosity full of people eager to gladly help others in whatever way they can. Let’s pray that we can cultivate this community of overflowing hearts here at Westlake.
